We have already created a child theme for our Pro members, download it from here

http://codex.wordpress.org/Child_ThemesChild themes are only good when you are making changes that modifies the php files.
For design related CSS stuff, custom.css or a plugin like http://wordpress.org/plugins/simple-custom-css/ is the way to go and are better than using child theme.

Just leave the respective fields empty from the live customizer and they will disappear.
For full width header and social buttons on top of it use the code given here:
Make sure that width of image is 1040px for best results.

You just have to enable display of date and author from Control Panel -> Main settings.
Make sure you are using the latest version 1.4.6. It appears you are using a very old version of theme.
